How to play New Orleans by Mandi Mapes
Start with the chords. New Orleans uses 6 different chords; Eb is held longest — about 35% of the song — so it is the one to make comfortable first. 5 of them need a barre (Eb, Cm, Ab, Bb); with a capo on fret 3 they become C, Am, F, G, E, D. If barres are new to you, read the barre guide or the capo guide.
Then the changes. The change that repeats most is Eb → Cm (8 times), followed by Cm → Ab (5 times). Drill that pair on its own before the song: the chords change roughly every 3.5 seconds (17 changes per minute), so each change needs to be ready in plenty of time — this is a relaxed song. See faster chord changes.
Strumming. At 150 BPM this is a fast song; a good starting pattern is D U D U D U D U (eighths, or the classic pop pattern in half time). Play along with the song and land your downstrokes on the kick drum. More in strumming patterns.
Practise with the page. Turn on lyric mode and loop the chorus; play the loop at a slower tempo until it is clean, then at full speed. The song is in Eb; if it sits wrong for your voice, use the transpose buttons — see transposing.
How to play the chords in New Orleans
Finger numbers: 1 index, 2 middle, 3 ring, 4 pinky. Strings are named from the thickest (low E) to the thinnest (high E).
- Eb: index finger flat across the A string through the high E string at the 6th fret; middle finger on the 8th fret of the D string; ring finger on the 8th fret of the G string; pinky on the 8th fret of the B string; strum from the A string down.

- Ab: index finger flat across all six strings at the 4th fret; ring finger on the 6th fret of the A string; pinky on the 6th fret of the D string; middle finger on the 5th fret of the G string; strum all six strings.
- Bb: index finger flat across the A string through the high E string at the 1st fret; middle finger on the 3rd fret of the D string; ring finger on the 3rd fret of the G string; pinky on the 3rd fret of the B string; strum from the A string down.
- G: middle finger on the 3rd fret of the low E string; index finger on the 2nd fret of the A string; ring finger on the 3rd fret of the high E string; let the D, G, B strings ring open; strum all six strings.
- F: index finger flat across all six strings at the 1st fret; ring finger on the 3rd fret of the A string; pinky on the 3rd fret of the D string; middle finger on the 2nd fret of the G string; strum all six strings.
Easier substitutes
- Instead of Cm, try Cm7: a softer grip that keeps the minor colour.
- Instead of Bb, try Bbmaj7: a partial shape on the top four strings, no full barre.
- Instead of F, try Fmaj7: drop the barre and leave the high E string open — it rings almost the same in most songs.
Swap one chord at a time and play along; if it still sounds right with the band, keep it.
