How to play Melatiku by Deni Kristiani
Start with the chords. Melatiku uses 3 different chords; Gm is held longest — about 65% of the song — so it is the one to make comfortable first. 2 of them need a barre (Gm, Cm). If barres are new to you, read the barre guide.
Then the changes. The change that repeats most is Gm → D (8 times), followed by D → Gm (8 times). Drill that pair on its own before the song: the chords change roughly every 8.1 seconds (7 changes per minute), so each change needs to be ready in plenty of time — this is a relaxed song. See faster chord changes.
Strumming. At 130 BPM this is a fast song; a good starting pattern is D U D U D U D U (eighths, or the classic pop pattern in half time). Play along with the song and land your downstrokes on the kick drum. More in strumming patterns.
Practise with the page. Turn on lyric mode and loop the chorus; play the loop at a slower tempo until it is clean, then at full speed. The song is in Gm; if it sits wrong for your voice, use the transpose buttons — see transposing.
How to play the chords in Melatiku
Finger numbers: 1 index, 2 middle, 3 ring, 4 pinky. Strings are named from the thickest (low E) to the thinnest (high E).
- Gm: index finger flat across all six strings at the 3rd fret; middle finger on the 5th fret of the A string; ring finger on the 5th fret of the D string; strum all six strings.
- D: index finger on the 2nd fret of the G string; ring finger on the 3rd fret of the B string; middle finger on the 2nd fret of the high E string; let the D string ring open; strum from the D string down.
- Cm: index finger flat across the A string through the high E string at the 3rd fret; ring finger on the 5th fret of the D string; pinky on the 5th fret of the G string; middle finger on the 4th fret of the B string; strum from the A string down.
Easier substitutes
- Instead of Gm, try Gm7: fewer fingers, same bass note.
- Instead of Cm, try Cm7: a softer grip that keeps the minor colour.
Swap one chord at a time and play along; if it still sounds right with the band, keep it.
